Details
English George III bow-front chest of drawers from the last quarter of the 1700s, crafted in imported Central American mahogany. The timber is well figured with good colour and retains its original hand French-polished finish, now with a developed patina.
The case comprises three full-width graduated drawers, all oak lined with perimeter cock-bead moulding. Hardware is original throughout, including brass locks, brass keyhole escutcheons, and oval brass drawer pulls with back plates.
Both the top edge and the base are embellished with parallel satinwood/fruitwood line inlays with a broad ebony line inlay between. The short, squared and tapered legs—reflecting the late-18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite manner—are also line-inlaid.
Condition: Very good for age, well cared-for and presenting in largely original order after around 220 years, with the original French-polished surface and patina retained.
Provenance: Acquired in the 1980s from a specialist Georgian dealer on Queen Street, Woollahra.
