About this piece
This decorative brass plate was likely produced in South Asia for export markets during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, combining European neoclassical imagery with Indo Persian ornamental traditions. The central roundel features a profile figure rendered in the cameo tradition, surrounded by a carefully balanced field of engraved floral and foliate motifs executed through hand chasing and incision. The rolled rim and continuous border pattern give the piece structural definition while allowing the surface engraving to remain the primary visual focus. The natural patina and softened highlights lend the plate a quiet visual authority, functioning equally well as a wall mounted object or as part of a layered interior display.
