About this piece
The kind of Lombok object that makes the category "basket" feel too small. It is technically a basket, but it behaves more like a container or a small domestic reliquary: a carved timber bowl, woven binding, short carved feet, a fitted lid. Ketak is a fine fern-stem fibre, and Lombok is well known for ketak weaving and for practical household forms made with an unusual amount of finish.
This piece sits right at the meeting point of utility and display. The carved lid keeps it from ever reading as generic, giving it just enough theatre without losing the grounded, made-to-be-used quality that makes Lombok craft so good in the first place.
