Pair of Eva lounge chairs by Bruno Mathsson, 1970s production by Firma Karl Mathsson, Värnamo, Sweden. Conceived in 1941, the Eva model is represented in the Museum of Modern Art’s collection (since 1944) and is a widely recognised example of Swedish modernist seating.

Each chair features laminated and bent beech frames, newly resaddled with vegetable-dyed German leather in natural brown. The flowing profiles express Mathsson’s structural approach to bent beech, while the restoration respects the original construction and provides durable, contemporary use.

Mathsson’s ergonomic research, informed by human anatomy, shaped the contoured form of the Eva, balancing support and lightness. His international breakthrough at the 1937 Paris World’s Fair and exchanges with Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Eames and Walter Gropius contributed to the broader influence of Swedish modern design.

Design Story

Charles Eames and Ray Eames were a husband and wife duo who fundamentally changed modern furniture and design culture in the 20th century.

Working from the United States from the 1940s onward, they approached design as a total system rather than isolated objects. Their work blended architecture, furniture, photography, film, and everyday life into one coherent vision.

They are best known for their long collaboration with Herman Miller, which helped bring their ideas into homes and offices worldwide. Together they created pieces that are still instantly recognisable today.

Among their most iconic designs is the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, a piece that combined plywood shell construction with luxurious comfort and became a global symbol of modern living. Earlier work like the LCW chair explored new ways of shaping wood into ergonomic forms, while their molded plastic chairs, including the DSW, brought accessible modern design into everyday dining rooms.

They also extended their thinking beyond furniture. The Eames House in California, part of the Case Study House program, shows their core philosophy clearly: modular structure, honest materials, and a deep respect for how people actually live.

The Eames legacy is not just a set of famous objects. It is a way of thinking about design as something that should be playful, useful, scalable, and deeply human at the same time.
