A pivotal piece of 20th century furniture, the Klassik 1022 is widely regarded as the first frameless table in modern design history. Designed by Peter Draenert in 1968, this piece broke away from traditional construction by treating the glass not just as a surface, but as a primary structural element.
The design philosophy was born from Draenert's desire for pure, unobstructed forms. By engineering a proprietary clamp system, he allowed the heavy 20mm glass plate to span the distance between the steel runners without the need for a supporting subframe. This pioneering approach created a floating aesthetic that became a hallmark of the Space Age and High Tech design movements. Today, the 1022 remains a staple in permanent collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
This specific example features the substantial 20mm thick glass, offering a level of visual weight and presence that defined German luxury modernism of the late 60s.
Condition
In very good vintage condition. The chrome frame is bright and highly reflective with only light signs of use consistent with age. The 20mm glass top has recently undergone a professional refinish, providing perfectly polished edges to both the top and bottom sides. The glass is excellent, free from major chips or distracting scratches.
