About this piece

Mid-19th century English toleware plate warmer, attributed to the Pontypool tradition and dating to c.1850. The black japanned body is hand-painted with floral bouquets and edged with fine gilt borders, a scheme associated with Pontypool ware.

A hinged front door opens to the original interior configured to hold heated plates, while the top lid was designed to retain warmth—an essential Victorian dining-room implement. The piece is raised on cabriole legs, giving the functional form a sculptural presence.

Surviving Pontypool-type plate warmers are uncommon, particularly those retaining strong painted decoration and balanced proportions. This example combines utility, folk art character, and refined English design.
