About this piece
One of the most classic and WASP jewels ever created are the Seaman Schepps shell ear-clips, and this pair are a terrific example. The clips which are mounted in 14 karat yellow gold are set with natural 'turbo' shells which have been polished and attached to their mounts with gold straps. To the top and bottom of each shell is a turquoise cabochon which has been rub-over set in 14 karat yellow gold. To the rear the clips are marked for manufacture by Seaman Schepps and are hallmarked for 14 karat gold purity. Seaman Schepps (1881-1972) was a North American jewellery designer based in New York who was known for his bold and unconventional designs which often included unusual materials like wood, shell, rock crystal and ivory. The shell ear-clips are one of his most iconic designs and were adored by identities like the Duchess of Windsor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and a great many East Coast American WASPs. This particular pair likely date to the 1970s and are a timeless classic. Both ear-clips do show some signs of wear in the form of very fine hairline cracks, mainly noticeable from the rear side, however are stable and have many years of wear ahead of them. The clip mechanism to each piece is in good working order and are both very secure. You couldn't find a better accessory to compliment a beautiful summery linen ensemble!
