About this piece
Stamped Herman Miller on the underside, with the "Designed by Charles Eames" medallion and the Summit Prime factory mark, "S" inside a circle, this RAR rocking chair is a genuine vintage production piece in true fibreglass, the material Herman Miller used before discontinuing fibreglass shell manufacture entirely in 1993 and not returning to it until a new process in 2013. This chair predates that gap by decades.
The RAR, Rocking Armchair Rod base, was one of five original base options Herman Miller launched for the Eames fibreglass shell in 1950, and remains the most recognisable of the group. Herman Miller discontinued the rocking base specifically in 1968, well before the wider shell chair line stopped, which places this piece no later than that year. Because the rocking base stopped so much earlier than the stationary swivel and dining versions, genuine RAR rockers are meaningfully scarcer today than other Eames shell chairs; most of what turns up on the secondary market is the swivel or dining base, not this one. The ivory shell has been professionally reupholstered in a coral orange Zepel Fibreguard fabric, a durable, stain-resistant weave, finished with the original black vinyl edge trim, giving it real presence without losing the shell's original silhouette underneath.
Very good condition, with no damage, just minor marks consistent with age. The rockers have been restored and refinished.
Dimensions: 69cm high, 63cm wide, 66cm deep, seat height 41cm.

Design Story
Founded in 1905 in Michigan as a traditional furniture company, it transformed in the 1930s under the leadership of D.J. De Pree. Instead of playing it safe with conventional styles, the company leaned into modernism, collaborating with visionary designers who would go on to define an era.
The turning point came through partnerships with figures like Charles Eames and Ray Eames, whose molded plywood and fiberglass chairs became icons of mid century design. George Nelson, the company’s design director, helped establish a cohesive and forward thinking identity, bringing in talents like Isamu Noguchi.
Over time, Herman Miller built a reputation for blending aesthetics with function. That philosophy carried into the late 20th century with innovations like the Aeron Chair, which redefined office seating and became a symbol of early tech culture.
Today, Herman Miller remains a global design leader, balancing heritage with innovation. Its pieces are not just furniture, they’re cultural artifacts that quietly signal taste, whether in a Silicon Valley office or a carefully curated living room.
