A Large French Studio Terracotta Amphora, 'L'Archange'
The tall two-handled vessel of generous ovoid form, the spreading trumpet neck above a boldly shouldered body tapering to a short foot, the whole enriched with applied barbotine decoration disposed in three distinct registers: at the junction of neck and shoulder, a beaded collar punctuated by a single applied spherical boss; at the upper body, a pair of large concentric spiral medallions of confident, almost hypnotic geometry; at the lower shoulder, a continuous undulating serpentine wave band interspersed with applied pellets and terminating in a loose volute; the zone between decorated with an angular stepped zigzag frieze of archaic character. The two strap handles of robust section rise from shoulder to neck in a single sweeping arc.
The base impressed with the title L'Archange in an arc above a circular die-stamped maker's medallion of rosette and foliate cartouche form. The whole in unglazed natural terracotta of warm reddish-brown tone, the surface displaying the honest patina of age and use.
