The long barley-twist standard, executed with a broad, open pitch, gives the column a pronounced graphic presence at height. The whole is supported on a tripod base with three outswept legs issuing from a central knop and terminating in inward-curling volute feet. The base carries a deep charcoal-black patina consistent with age.
The barley-twist—also known as the colonne salomonique or Solomonic column, its spiral lineage recalling the great twisted columns of the baldachin of Saint Peter’s in Rome—lends the lamp an architectural gravity. The gilded foliate corona operates as both shade-carrier and decorative flourish, introducing warmth above the darker, more austere ironwork—a characteristically French balance of rigour below and elegance above.
