An exceptional piece of Australian modernist history by B. Burgess - c1977.
Crafted in Preston, this stunning lowboy has been superbly restored to better-than-new condition. It combines the warm, honeyed tones of solid Oak with the spirited "Atomic" styling of the mid-20th century.
This piece features a rare and clever design configuration. While the facade presents a symmetrical, architectural grid of 9 drawers, featuring the original sculpted brass wave handles and geometric detailed knobs, it is designed as a spacious 6-drawer dresser.
This intentional design choice allows for the visual rhythm of a multi-drawer apothecary cabinet while providing the practicality of deeper, more substantial storage capacity for modern living. The chest floats on solid tapered legs capped with original brass ferrules, giving it a lightness of form that belies its solid construction.
A true collector's item, the interior proudly bears the distinct Burgess stamp from their factory at 25 Raglan St, Preston. This mark is a significant piece of Melbourne's industrial history, recalling the era when skilled European artisans transformed the standard of Australian joinery. For definitive provenance, the lowboy is also clearly date-stamped '1977' on the back.

The timber has been professionally stripped and refinished with a premium Hardwax Oil. This lengthy process nourishes the wood from within, resulting in a durable, spill-resistant satin finish that highlights the stunning chatoyancy (natural shimmer) of the Australian Oak grain.
The dress is very solid, sturdy, and maintains the original brass hardware. All 6 spotless clean drawers slide smoothly and effortlessly.
