This is a very good and compact size genuine antique French last quarter of the 1800s Chest of Drawers of narrow upright shape.
As it has seven (7) drawers the French would refer to it as a Semainier where as due to its hinged locking mechanism the English would refer to it as a Wellington Chest.
Welling ton Chests are unique in that instead of each drawer having an individual lock they have a full height hinged pilaster that when closed and locked secures all the drawers.
The cabinet is solidly constructed from solid walnut with a Pine back board and the drawers are constructed from solid Oak. There are seven dovetailed drawers in all full width and stacked vertically and all have raised panel fronts with a turned drawer pull knob and a highly decorative lighter coloured feature Walnut burl panel. The sides are also paneled defined by a nicely profiled raised border molding. Either side of the drawers there is a full height decorative paneled and carved decorated pilaster. One pilaster is fixed while the other has a full height brass hinge. and when closed may be locked in position by a single lock securing all the drawers. There is a protruding platform base which is nicely profiled and sits on turned bun feet at the front and squared block feet at the back.
Condition: Over all very good commensurate with age and use. it is structurally sound and without splits and has its original polish. Due to age and use there are a few minor marks to the top surface and part of the lock is deficient.
