About this piece

An antique pair of carved and painted doors from China, dating to the late 19th century.

Columns of black calligraphy run down a yellow ground in the upper panels, set within a fretwork frame. Above them sit carved "hundred antiques" objects, among them a writing brush with bound books and a vase of flowers, framed by scrollwork. Drawn from the objects of a scholar's study, this was a favoured Qing dynasty motif, often carrying wishes for good fortune. A band of carved fruiting branches with birds and butterflies runs below, and the lower sections are painted green and framed in black, ending in a reddish brown panel at the base. Both faces of each door are decorated, with different carvings on each side.

Sold as a pair.
