About this piece
The composition emphasises movement and form without excess, placing the tiger within a subtle setting that heightens its physicality. Scale contributes to the impact of the piece, presenting a significant Edo-period work with strong visual coherence across all six panels.
Dimensions: 383 cm W x 170 cm H
Artist: Yosenin Karenobu (1753–1808) was an Edo-period painter within the Kano school, noted for balancing decorative refinement with an increasing interest in realistic depictions of nature and animals. Working in the established Kano lineage, his paintings were appreciated by the samurai elite and the shogunate for their compositional discipline and elegant surface. This screen aligns with that practice, combining dynamic animal portrayal with the measured decorum of the Kano style.
