English Oak chair, or 'joined backstool', with unusual vase-shaped splat and two straight, all carved with foliate designs, the crest rail with scroll finials & center, the legs & front stretcher turned.

Total height 96cm, seat width 46cm.
A 'Backstool' is literally a stool with a back; in the 16th & early 17th century, stools were the usual seat, except for the head-seat at the table, who would have a back & arms. By the mid 17th century, backs on stools were commonplace, and the 'chair' as we know it had evolved.
