A very good set of eight contemporary hand made solid Mahogany show frame ‘balloon back’ chairs in the style of an 1850s original.. These chairs were further extensively custom refined by one of Sydneys leading restorers Robert Collins now retired. The solid Mahogany frames are upholstered with fully sprung seats, hand rolled and stitched edges plus covered with very expensive woven black horsehair fabric produced on 200 year old hand operated looms.
Forty five years ago back in the mid 1980s it cost our vendor cost nearly $800 per chair to purchase the chair frames, have them refined, colour polished and antiqued plus properly upholstered with sprung seats hand rolled stitched edges, covered in woven horsehair fabric and finished with individual hand applied brass studs. To have this done in Australia today would cost in excess of $1,250 per chair.
