The story of Fler is the story of modern Australia. Fred Lowen and Ernest Rodeck, both Jewish refugees who arrived in Australia after fleeing Nazi Europe, met in an internment camp. In 1946, they started a business in a small two-horse stable in Melbourne. From these humble beginnings, with Lowen turning wooden bowls and Rodeck making pencils, they built the Fler company into the country's most beloved furniture brand, bringing clean lines and beautiful, functional design to households across the nation.
These chairs are a testament to their vision. The design showcases a sophisticated understanding of form, with a sculptural frame and elegantly tapered legs. The most compelling feature is the expertly crafted backrest, supported by two gracefully shaped Tasmanian Myrtle timber uprights that create a sense of visual lightness and strength. This was the essence of the Scandi-Pacific style that Fler championed: clean, functional lines realised in beautiful local timbers.
