Details

The Polish born Jorge Zalszupin moved to Brazil after World War II, where he found an opportunity to develop his extremely sensual, modern architecture. A desire to rebuild a new post-war world and a wave of development in Brazil proved an ideal time for this creative atmosphere to flourish. Graceful lines, strong use of local woods and a combination of impeccable woodworking and classical detailing mark Zalszupin’s furniture. He became part of a select team of talented furniture designers, who worked closely with Oscar Niemeyer on the conception and production of furniture for the new federal capital. The pieces he designed during this time utilized the luxury of leather and combined it with classical Brazilian rosewood.
In the 1950s Zalszupin founded L’Atelier, a furniture design manufacturer in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Design Story

Jorge Zalszupin was one of the most important figures in Brazilian modernist furniture design, known for blending European modernism with the warmth, sensuality, and craftsmanship of Brazilian materials and culture.

Born in Warsaw in 1922, Zalszupin fled Europe during World War II before eventually settling in São Paulo in 1949. Inspired by the rise of Brazilian modern architecture and figures like Oscar Niemeyer, he began designing furniture that matched the optimism and modernity of postwar Brazil.

In 1959, he founded L’Atelier, a pioneering furniture company that helped industrialize modern furniture production in Brazil while maintaining exceptional craftsmanship and material quality. His designs combined clean architectural lines with rich Brazilian woods, soft curves, and an emphasis on comfort and tactility.

Among his most celebrated creations are the Dinamarquesa Chair and the Cubo armchair, both of which became icons of Brazilian mid century design. While influenced by Scandinavian furniture, Zalszupin’s work always felt warmer and more expressive, balancing structure with sensuality and elegance.

Today, Jorge Zalszupin is regarded as one of the architects of Brazilian modern design. His furniture remains highly collectible around the world, admired for its combination of sculptural sophistication, craftsmanship, and unmistakably Brazilian character.
