A console shaped for presence, carrying the ornate drama of late nineteenth century Italian craft into a contemporary interior. Carved in Italy around the turn of the century, this Rococo Revival console was built with gilded legs, a pierced apron and a warm marble top. Imported to Australia in the mid twentieth century, it remained with one family for more than seventy years, its ornamental language preserved through generations. The detailing reflects a period when Italian makers embraced exuberant carving as a mark of skill and cultural pride, holding the expressive theatre of European craft within a compact architectural frame. It carries the atmosphere of homes that valued display, history and richly layered decoration.
