Exhibition-quality English Victorian two-door side/display cabinet, circa 1860s, showing a clear French Louis XV influence with serpentine-shaped ends. Crafted from imported Central American mahogany and finished in honey-coloured, decoratively figured walnut.
The well-figured top is book-matched and detailed with a complex profiled multi-edge moulding and a perimeter satinwood line inlay. The frieze features multiple ebony and satinwood line-inlaid panels, finished with a lower applied decorative brass moulding. The paired doors are fitted with a cast brass cover strip to echo the frieze, and incorporate glazed panels that reveal the shelved interior. Each door is framed by ebony line-inlay crossbanding around the glass and a bold cast brass moulding to the glass perimeter.
Flanking the doors are curved, crossbanded and panelled engaged pilasters with well-cast brass mounts to the top and base. The serpentine sides carry fine line inlays forming a panel. The cabinet is set on a plinth base with complex multi-edge moulding and line inlay, shaped to complement both cabinet and top.
Condition: Desirable original condition, excellent for age. Metal mounts may be re-gilded if preferred.
