Antique early 20th century emerald green opium ‘pillow’

This Shiwan ceramic earthenware pillow features an emerald green glaze. Pillows in this shape were typically used by opium smokers to store their valuables once intoxicated. 

Shiwan ware ceramics were made in workshops  in the  Shiwanzhen district near Guangdong, China. This beautiful piece is from Melaka, Malaysia. Melakan antiques are often of Chinese origin as the Malay of Chinese origin maintained connection to their own Chinese heritage through family heirlooms and general household feature pieces.
