About this piece
Mid-1800s Dutch cabinet on chest in the earlier Rococo style, constructed in heavy European solid oak and finished in well-figured, honey-coloured walnut burl. The casework is embellished with applied ebonised mouldings and carvings, including flowers, ribbons/bows, floral swags and classical urns. It retains its original hand French-polished finish, now mellowed, and original cast bronze/brass hardware throughout, including keyhole escutcheons, drawer pulls and locks.
Formed in two sections, the cabinet is designed for practical transport: the hinged doors lift off and the drawers and shelves can be removed.
The upper cabinet has a domed top with a substantial carved urn crest and trailing carved flowers to each side. Straight vertical sides frame serpentine-front doors set with applied carved and ebonised motifs and mouldings—flowers, urns, ribbons/bows and floral swags. The interior presents full-width shelves above a bottom row of side-by-side drawers.
The lower commode/chest is of bombe profile with four tiers of drawers and perimeter cock-beading. At the top sit two side-by-side oak-lined drawers with serpentine fronts, each fitted with cast bronze/brass pulls. Below are three serpentine full-width graduated drawers, complete with original locks, keyhole escutcheons and pull hardware. The whole stands on large carved animal paw feet. Hardware may be gilded if desired.
Condition: Requires minor overall conservation and detailing to be undertaken by a professional restorer; alternatively, it may be acquired as-is for completion by the buyer’s preferred restorer.
Dimensions: 190 cm W x 75 cm D x 275 cm H.
