About this piece
Early 19th-century French Cherrywood Country House Dresser. It features a large two-piece provincial construction, historically used for displaying tableware and storing kitchen essentials in rural estate homes. Measures: 250cm Length, 45cm depth, 220cm Height : Materials: Crafted from premium solid cherry wood with a warm, deeply aged honey-toned patina. Upper Section: Features a decorative pierced fretwork or scalloped valance cornice over open display shelving, flanked by two arched-panel side cupboards and small base drawers.
This specific type of country furniture originates from the Loire Valley and central provincial regions of France. Regional Markers: The Wood Choice: The lush Loire Valley and central fruit-growing regions of France historically provided an abundance of wild cherry wood. Local artisans favoured it over northern oak or southern walnut due to its fine grain, easy workability, and rich honey-toned patina. The Architecture: (Le Vaisselier): This specific layout is a traditional vaisselier (crockery dresser). In Central France and the Loire region, rural estates built these imposing, large-scale dual-section units. They maximised space in grand country kitchens by combining a low storage buffet base with an open plate rack.
The restrained Louis XVI Influence: The straight, panelled geometric doors and cleanly moulded cornice panels draw directly from the Parisian Louis XVI Neoclassical period. Provincial craftsmen in the central valleys adapted these elegant royal styles into simplified, robust designs for wealthy rural landowners.
While standard 19th-century French provincial dressers typically average between 140cm and 180cm to fit standard regional kitchens, grand country house examples of this monumental scale are rarely available. True 2.5-metre antique dressers were bespoke orders commissioned exclusively for the grandest estate dining halls, châteaux, or large farm manor kitchens.
