Antique (120+ year old) Soumak rug from Caucasus region.
Tattered edges as visible in pictures in line with a lifetime plus of use. This is one to be mounted and framed to preserve its intrinsic beauty for generations to come.
Soumak is a tapestry technique for weaving sturdy, decorative fabrics. A flat weave somewhat resembling kilim but with a stronger and thicker weave, a smooth front face and a ragged back, whereas kilim is smooth on both sides.
The Caucasus is a region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea comprising of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, parts of Southern Russia and parts of North Eastern Türkiye. Suffice to say the region is mountainous, culturally diverse and rich in history as well as natural beauty.
