Artek and the modernist tradition
Founded in 1935 in Helsinki by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl, Artek was created to unite modern design with cultural dialogue. The company name reflects this purpose: a synthesis of art and technology. From the beginning, Artek aimed not only to produce and sell furniture, but also to promote a modern way of living through exhibitions and education.
Alvar and Aino Aalto’s design legacy
Central to Artek’s history is the work of architect and designer Alvar Aalto. His use of natural materials, curved wood, and functional forms helped define Nordic modernism and shaped international design throughout the 20th century. Aino Aalto also played a key role in establishing Artek’s creative direction, overseeing its design office and leading the company as Managing Director. Together, the Aaltos introduced a human-centred approach to modern furniture that remains relevant today.
A platform for culture and design
From its first store in Helsinki, Artek served as more than a showroom. It became a cultural institution that presented new ideas in art, design, and architecture. The adjoining Artek Gallery exhibited work by figures like Picasso, Léger, and Calder, positioning the brand as a connector between Finnish design and the international modernist movement. This cultural ambition continues to influence Artek’s identity and product development.
Clarity, functionality and poetic form
Artek’s collection is shaped by a consistent design language: clear lines, practical construction, and a strong connection to architecture. Many of its most recognisable pieces, such as the Stool 60 or the Armchair 41, were designed by Alvar Aalto and remain in continuous production. Alongside these classics, Artek collaborates with contemporary designers to expand its offering while maintaining its original vision.
Artek at Bazaa
The Artek collection on Bazaa includes vintage and contemporary pieces that reflect the brand’s dedication to purposeful design. Each object, whether a chair, table or light, represents Artek’s ongoing effort to shape modern living through a balance of innovation and material integrity. These designs are suited to interiors where clarity, functionality and design history are valued.
