Art Deco cigarette case by Jacques Cartier for Cartier London, 1934, crafted in solid 18 karat yellow gold. The exterior shows a machined finish, contrasted with a highly polished interior.
A cabochon sapphire–set clasp secures the case; the clasp is set with four fancy-cut cabochon sapphires, likely Ceylonese in origin for the period. Inside, an articulated retaining bar—pierced with an Art Deco geometric pattern—holds cigarettes in place. In contemporary use, the bar can secure cards, ID and small essentials. An original Art Deco monogram appears to the interior, likely “NWN” or a variation of these letters.
Hallmarked with crisp London assay marks for 18 karat gold and a 1934 date letter, together with “JC” for Jacques Cartier. Signed in fine cursive script “Cartier London”.
Cartier’s London branch, developed by Jacques Cartier while his brothers Pierre and Louis led New York and Paris respectively, served the British Royal Family, the aristocracy and public figures during the 1920s and 1930s, and produced notable wristwatches including the Crash and the Baignoire Allongée.
Condition: Very good for age, with slight abrasions and minute dents to the gold, consistent with near a century of careful use.
