Compact French semainier/Wellington chest from the last quarter of the 1800s, of narrow upright form with seven stacked drawers.
Constructed in solid walnut with a pine back board; the seven full-width drawers are in solid oak and dovetailed. Each drawer features a raised panel front with a turned wooden pull and a lighter-toned walnut burl feature panel. The sides are panelled and defined by a profiled raised border moulding.
Flanking the drawer stack are full-height decorative, panelled and carved pilasters. One pilaster is fixed; the other is fitted with a full-length brass hinge and, when closed, locks to secure all drawers with a single lock—an arrangement typically associated with Wellington chests, while the seven-drawer format is known in France as a semainier.
The chest sits on a protruding, profiled platform base with turned bun feet to the front and squared block feet to the rear. Retains its original polish.
Condition: Overall very good, commensurate with age and use. Structurally sound and without splits. Minor marks to the top surface. Part of the lock is deficient.
