English Victorian inlaid walnut display or side cabinet of rectangular form, 1870s. Versatile as a display cabinet, bookcase, or drinks cabinet.
The overhanging top is book-matched in golden honey-toned figured walnut, above a curved cornice. A pair of timber-framed glazed panelled doors with rounded top corners opens to a fabric-lined interior with a full-width shelf; provision for additional shelves if desired. The cabinet sits on a protruding plinth base with a shaped front apron.
Narrow vertical panels flanking the doors feature applied cast brass decorative mounts to the top and bottom in the French manner. The doors have a French-style mounted keyhole escutcheon and the cabinet is complete with a key.
Throughout, the top, cornice, doors, and the panels either side of the doors are finished with complementary crossbanding and fine line inlays. The cornice, outer door panels, and doors are further embellished with bold, colourful floral and foliate parquetry inlay.
Condition:
- Overall excellent for age, recently professionally refurbished by the previous owner.
- Minor repairs to veneers on the base sides.
