Early Victorian English side/sofa table by Holland & Sons, stamped in one drawer with the Belgrave Square, London mark used between 1843 and 1845.
The rectangular top has rounded corners and a lamb’s tongue edge moulding, finished in bookmatched figured walnut with a narrow rosewood banding. The frieze presents a pair of flush-fitting, side-by-side drawers and foliate-carved, scrolled end brackets in the French Louis XV manner. An elongated lower beading runs the length of the frieze. The piece is double sided with the frieze finished all round, allowing it to free-stand and be viewed from both sides.
Full-height end support columns are well turned and profiled, embellished with long flutes in the French Louis XVI manner. The supports terminate on shaped plinth bases with a turned and carved patera above lobed, flattened bun feet, retaining the original all-brass castor assemblies beneath.
Provenance: Stamped in one drawer with the Holland & Sons Belgrave Square, London stamp used 1843–1845. Owing to their high level of craftsmanship, Holland & Sons were favoured by Queen Victoria and held the Royal Warrant, supplying furniture to Government and Royal residences including Windsor Castle, Balmoral Castle, Osborne House and Marlborough House. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition and at the London, Paris and Vienna exhibitions. Examples of their work are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
