Born in Chicago in 1885, Warren McArthur began his career as an industrial designer in 1925 (aged 40), by creating furniture for the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, which was designed by his brother Albert Chase McArthur.
After the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Arizona Biltmore failed, and McArthur moved to Los Angeles, California to create a furniture fabrication company. In the early 1930s, aluminium became a popular industrial design material, and McArthur developed a specialisation in designing and making aluminium tubular furniture, including chairs, tables, sofas, lamps, and ashtrays.
This piece was designed by McArthur circa 1937. It was one of the first designs manufactured by Australian company Namco after procuring a license to produce McArthur's furniture starting in 1947. Namco continued to manufacture McArthur’s aluminium tubed furniture into the mid-1960s.
To this day, the prized ‘Z’ chair cuts a contemporary and sophisticated image. The blend of high quality cool blue vinyl and anodised aluminium imparts a distinctly Bauhaus aura. Having undergone restoration, this piece presents in excellent vintage condition.
