Biophilic design: connecting with nature

Biophilic design is a growing trend in architecture and interior design, aiming at increasing our connection to nature within man-made environments. In architecture, we can find iconic examples such as the Featherston House by Robin Boyd, with its indoor garden and pond bringing the forest inside of the residence. Meanwhile, interior design offers a more accessible way to invite nature into our homes through simple touches such as potted plants, flower arrangements, floral patterns, and plant-inspired accessories.

Potted plants

This is probably the most obvious, yet most effective way to bring greenery inside your house. A simple plant can transform an environment when placed in the right pot. If you want to keep it classic and stick to traditional materials such as ceramic or stone, then our vintage glazed yellow storage jars from Indonesia or our aged round limestone planters could be the right fit. Otherwise, you can pick something more distinctive, such as our cast lacework kindling box, the perfect statement piece to compliment your greenery.

Floral arrangements

If you’re not blessed with a green thumb, a floral arrangement could be the right solution for you. In this case, it is important to choose the appropriate vase to compliment your space. A timeless glass piece such as our Victorian blue glass specimen vase (circa 1880) could be the perfect way to elevate the design of your living room, but also add a pop of colour. Otherwise, you could pick a more modern composition and pair two compatible pieces such as our Gilbert Méténier vase in flaming yellow and blue and our Gilbert Méténier Art Nouveau French Grand Vase

Floral patterns

An ever-green trend in interior design, but also fashion, floral patterns can act as a substitute for physical plants. You can find flower imagery in everyday home decor items, from cushions to carpets, and from glassware to pottery, but our favourite pieces featuring floral patterns in the Bazaa collection are two: the "Red Flowers" poster based on Andy Warhol's 1964 silkscreen, which would be a great addition to any room that needs a touch of colour, and the 1970s red floral wallpaper, for a space with a unique personality.

Plant-inspired accessories

For a fresh take on biophilic design, you can try including plant-shaped items in your home decor collection. And don’t make the mistake of thinking that these pieces can only fit a specific design style: some can be fun and playful accessories, while others are very elegant and sophisticated. For instance, our glass floral lantern and our Crystal D’Arques French serving bowl can be stylish additions to your home, thanks to their Art Nouveau-inspired elements.
