The house answer was charm over grandeur, small, useful, hand-blown things. In the 1970s Bjorn Ramel designed this series for them, a hyacinth-shaped body rolled through splashes of cobalt and green, then set on a thick clear pedestal so the colour appears to float.

It was sold as a candle holder and works as well as a posy vase; the splashes throw blue shadows when lit from within. Both original labels are still on the foot, which after fifty years is its own small miracle. No chips or cracks, just a seed bubble or two from the hot shop, as made. A factory that named itself after three ordinary surnames, still speaking up from the bottom shelf.

Specifications

Kosta, Sweden, c. 1970s

Bjorn Ramel for SEA Glasbruk; both original labels to the foot

Hand-blown glass, blue and green splashes cased in pale glass, solid clear pedestal foot

16 cm high, 11.5 cm wide; 0.85 kg

No chips or cracks; the odd seed bubble from the hot shop, as made
