Details
Japanese gilt bronze Shokudai (candle holder), circa 1865, of a circular form with a stylised dragon head handle on the rim, three engraved scrolling foliage groups decorated on the flat rim, some gilt faded, base marked Dai Yamasaki Yamasho.
Why we love it: Such a beautiful candlestick to add to your collection, or to start one! Our favourite way to dress a table for maximum impact is to vary the size, shape and texture of our candlesticks and there’s no better way to do this than by foraging for patinated pieces that tell a story even before they are adorned. Imagine the history here, 160 years old and coming from the end of the Edo period when Japan was opening up again to foreigners. Sourced from a British private collection.
