Details

This is a very good example and impressive size and nicely shaped bronze Vase with enamel (Champleve) banding. Technically as it has two handles it may also be referred to as an Amphora.

It also features two circular panels featuring three stylised Hollyhock leaves which was the Mon for the Tokugawa shogunate also known as the Edo shogunate who were the military Government from 1603 to1868. This dynasty presided over 250years of peace and prosperity in Japan including the rise of the merchant class and increasing urbanisation. The also closed off Japanese society to Western influences. Towards the end all ready weakened by an eroding economic base the Tokugawa shogunate fell due to the arrival of American and Europeans in the 1850s who were intent on opening Japan to trade and foreign intercourse. It fell in 1868 and so began the Meiji period.

Apart from the enamel decoration the vase is very well cast and detailed plus features front and rear shaped landscape panels, and applied cast Dragon heads with ring handles.
