The surface has a rich, deeply worn and mellow patina. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRobust walnut tables of this type were a mainstay of the Italian provincial interior, made throughout Tuscany, Emilia and Lombardy from the seventeenth century onward. Related to the long monastic fratino tables of the conventual refectory, they served as writing tables, side tables and work surfaces in religious houses, farmhouses and palazzi alike. Their construction, with a heavy plank top, a frieze of drawers and end supports braced by low stretchers, puts strength and durability before ornament.
