Iron frames with wool upholstery. Priced individually.

Martin Eisler (born Vienna, 1913) earned his architecture degree in 1936. Following the onset of the Second World War, he moved first to Czechoslovakia and then, in 1938, to Argentina, where he practised as an architect and interior designer and established an interior design firm later named Interieur Forma. In the early 1950s he relocated to Brazil.

Carlo Hauner (born Brescia, 1927) studied technical drawing and drawing at the Brera Academy in Milan. After participating in the 1948 Venice Biennale, he moved to Brazil and worked across textiles, ceramics, furniture and architecture. He founded a furniture production company and acquired a factory from Lino Ba Bardi and her husband Pietro Bardi, renaming it Móveis Artesanal.

In 1953 Hauner met Eisler while producing furniture for Eisler’s brother-in-law, Ernesto Wolf. With Wolf’s support they opened Galeria Artesanal, the retail arm of Móveis Artesanal, in São Paulo. Aiming at both international and office markets, Móveis Artesanal later became Forma. Alongside Oca, Forma grew into a major Brazilian furniture producer and secured an exclusive licence to sell Knoll furniture, bringing the work of Mies van der Rohe, Charles Eames and Harry Bertoia into the Brazilian market.

Hauner and Eisler’s work is noted for the use of Brazilian woods and slender tubular frames, spanning furniture, ceramics and textiles. Notable designs include the concha/haia (shell) chair and the Costella lounge chair. In 1958 Hauner returned to Italy to establish Forma di Brescia, serving clients such as the Embassy of Brazil in Rome and Vatican City. These sculptural forms sit at the intersection of French folk craftsmanship and the post-war brutalist ethos, where honest materials and unadorned structure defined the design language.

Post-war French context
Emerging from France’s 1950s cultural renaissance, the chairs reflect a shift from pre-war formality toward raw, material-led design. Aligned with the brutalist philosophy (from “brut” meaning raw), the construction foregrounds substance, mass, and visible structure.

Handcrafted folk art heritage
Each chair bears clear evidence of handwork, with forms that speak to direct engagement with solid oak and the maker’s individual expression.
