This is a very good example of a genuine antique English Georgian Regency period medium sized Sofa Table. which is frequently used as a general purpose Side Table.
Sofa tables are defined by having the drop leaves on the short ends where as a Pembroke table has the drop leaveson the long sides. Sutherland tables also have the drop leaves on the long side however the leaves are usually wider than the top centre section which is usually narrow.
This table is finished in prestigious imported Central American Mahogany and is embellished by the inclusion of lighter outer broard banding of Satinwood and finer perimeter Rosewood cross banding along with Satinwood / Fruitwood and Ebony fine line inlays.
The drop sides when raised are supported by double gate leg supports beneath either end.
The frieze section features on the front two side by side opening drawers with pairs of brass drawer pull handles and at the rear for aesthetic reasons are two faux drawer fronts.
The whole is supported on two vertical end flat tressles connected by a turned stretcher. The end tressles diverge at the bottom into pairs of outward swept then downward swept tapering legs which terminate in original all brass castor assemblies. The legs feature Ebony line inlays possibly in respect to the passing of King George III.
Condition: Excellent commensurate with age and use which is minimal as this type of furniture was predominately made for use in houses with substantial rooms and as the name implies often used in the middle of a large room behind a sofa.
