Kohn’s turned-wood language is present in the bobbin-turned stiles flanking the backrest, finished with decorative finials. Restored to original condition.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nAn original paper identification label remains to the underside of the seat. The ornate rectangular label bearing the “Semper Sursum” medallion and a griffin-and-floral border was primarily used by the Austrian firm between 1880 and 1910, the elaborate frame intended to deter counterfeiting during a highly competitive period for bentwood manufacturers.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nFounded in 1849 by Jacob and Josef Kohn and operating out of Vienna, the company advanced industrial steam-bent beech production and emerged as a principal competitor to Gebrüder Thonet.
