Details
18th-century French Louis XIII walnut side chair, circa 1700. The tall rectangular back with gently arched cresting frames an upholstered back panel; the squared back stiles terminate in faceted block finials. A deep, over-stuffed seat of conforming width sits above four boldly turned baluster-and-ball front legs, joined by a bobbin-turned front stretcher. The rear legs are of square section, united by a plain flat H-stretcher. The turned elements retain notable depth and crispness of profile.
Reupholstered throughout in a large-scale sage and white gingham check cotton, the restrained simplicity of the fabric forms a considered counterpoint to the sombre walnut frame.
The emphatic turned front legs and bobbin stretcher align this example with the most recognisable phase of French seat furniture — the Louis XIII period — when the turner’s craft was a primary structural and decorative language. The baluster leg, informed by Flemish and Netherlandish influence under the regencies of Marie de Médicis and Anne of Austria, was characteristic of the time. The tall back, later displaced by the broader, more architectural back panel of the Louis XIV fauteuil, imparts an austere, formal presence associated with ecclesiastical and juridical settings as well as domestic interiors. The squared, faceted finials are a regional detail, diverging from the more common turned finial and suggesting a provincial maker working within the broader national idiom.
